Statement on President Biden Clinching Democratic Nomination

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 15, 2024

South Dakota Democratic Party Chair Shane Merrill released the following statement after President Joe Biden earned enough pledged delegates to become the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee.

“The South Dakota Democratic Party is excited to support President Joe Biden as he vies for a second term in the White House.

“In just four years, the Biden-Harris Administration has accomplished so much for South Dakota and the tribal nations that share the same geography. Recently, the USDA award the Oglala Sioux Tribe $35 million to improve access to high speed internet. Crews also just broke ground on the Oglala Dam Remediation project thanks to $58.2 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe will receive $1 million to connect homes to transmission and distribution that is powered by clean energy.

“Thanks to the American Rescue Plan Act, South Dakota is investing $700 million into our water and waste water systems. South Dakota will also receive $352 million for clean water and drinking water projects through federal fiscal year 2026. This money will be used to upgrade water treatment plants, water distribution and piping systems, and lead pipe replacement. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Chamberlain Municipal Airport received $855,000 to build a new terminal.

“South Dakota is also one of a handful of states that can use the IRS’ new online tax filing system, giving people a more affordable option to get their taxes done. The Biden-Harris Administration is also helping to lower prescription drug costs for about 40,000 South Dakotans when new policies go into effect next year.

“President Biden has also been committed to helping South Dakota’s agriculture industry, including investments into specialty crops and supporting climate-smart agriculture practices.

“We look forward to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago where Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will officially be the nominees for President and Vice President of the United States.”
