SDDP Statement on the 52nd Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act
“On this day in 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act. This momentous achievement was the result of years of struggle and the hard work and sacrifice of countless organizers – some famous and many unknown – who fought and bled to make sure every American was able to exercise their right to vote. Democrats believe that voting is a fundamental right in America, and that our democracy is stronger when more people participate in our elections.
“As we celebrate this great victory for fairness, equality, freedom, Democrats also recognize that this struggle over the right to vote is not over, due in part to voter suppression tactics used by Republicans in South Dakota and around the country. Fortunately, the judicial system has continued to expose Republican voter suppression tactics for what they truly are: a disgraceful attack on Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos, working families, students, first-generation Americans, and the elderly. While Republicans try to trample on our most sacred freedoms, Democrats will do everything we can to end discrimination and protect the one right that preserves all others — the right to vote.”
