SDDP Statement on the 82nd Anniversary of the Social Security

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota Democratic Party released the following statement from Executive Director Sam Parkinson regarding the 82nd Anniversary of Social Security, which benefits about 20 percent of all South Dakotans, including 96 percent of South Dakotans aged 65 and over:

170811_SSA-Anniversary_TWWhen President Franklin Roosevelt signed Social Security into law eight decades ago, he said the law would ‘bring protection to the average citizen’ and their families. 82 years later, Social Security remains a cornerstone of our society, helping ensure the dignity of a secure retirement for millions of American families. Social Security reflects the shared belief that every American should be able to retire with dignity after decades of hard work, and that no American should face poverty because he or she is disabled, or when a loved one dies.

“Democrats believe that Social Security is a solemn promise that strengthens our middle class and expands opportunity for all Americans. We will continue to protect this vital program against Republican attacks and fight to protect the security, opportunity, and prosperity of generations to come.”
