The SDDP Responds to Republican Carelessness with Petitions

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota Democratic Party released the following statement from Executive Director Sam Parkinson in response to a report that Speaker Mark Mickelson’s ballot measure group left petitions unattended in public overnight:

“This report is evidence of inexcusable carelessness on the part of Speaker Mickelson and his group. State law clearly dictates that petition circulators witness every signature on petitions. Besides the potential for voters’ information and signatures being stolen, if any names on those petitions were added without being witnessed by the circulator signing the circulator’s oath on those petitions, that circulator will be subject to charges of perjury. This is just one more example of the Republican establishment in Pierre not respecting the ballot measure process and thinking they and their allies are above the rules that apply to everyone else.”
