Chair’s Note: Despite overwhelming opposition from teachers, law enforcement professionals, school boards and families, the school sentinels bill was signed into law last week. Governor Dennis Daugaard thrust South Dakota into the international spotlight because of a bill authored as a hasty reaction to a national tragedy. Governor Daugaard’s legacy keeps racking up more and more anti-education pages – devastating funding cuts, poorly crafted (and thankfully rejected) merit pay proposals and now more guns in schools. That’s certainly not a legacy I’d be proud of.
