SDDP to Hold Presidential Straw Poll at McGovern Day
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota Democratic Party today announced that it will hold a Presidential Straw Poll fundraiser during its 2019 McGovern Day, which will be held on April 27thin Sioux Falls.
“We’re excited to announce this opportunity for South Dakota Democrats to make their voices heard this early in the primary process,” said SDDP Executive Director Sam Parkinson. “With the excitement around our great field of candidates for president, we wanted to give Democrats in our state a chance to participate in the process before our primary next June.”
As part of the Straw Poll fundraiser, attendees of the McGovern Day events in Sioux Falls will have a chance to buy and cast “votes” for their preferred candidate during the day through the McGovern Day Banquet Dinner. The winner of the Straw Poll fundraiser will be announced at the end of the Banquet. The full rules of the Straw Poll fundraiser, including an online participation option, will be finalized and available on the SDDP website in the coming weeks.
The SDDP invites all South Dakota Democrats to participate in the fundraiser and cast their ballots for their favorite candidate. However, the results of the Straw Poll fundraiser will be non-binding; delegate apportionment for the 2020 Democratic National Convention will be decided in the June 2020 primary.
“To be clear, the Straw Poll is just for fun, and to help us raise money to elect Democrats up and down the ballot in South Dakota,” Parkinson said. “There’s nothing at stake here except bragging rights for your preferred candidate.”
All the events of this year’s McGovern Day, including the evening Banquet will be held at the at the Best Western Plus Ramkota Hotel, located at 3200 W Maple Street in Sioux Falls.
A full schedule for the day, and the speakers for the 2019 McGovern Day Banquet Dinner, will be released in the coming weeks. Previous speakers for the McGovern Day Banquet include Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Rep. Tim Ryan, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and Sen. Jon Tester.
