Democrats File for State Legislature
Sioux Falls, SD (April 4, 2016)-
The South Dakota Democratic Party announced 86 Democratic candidates have filed petitions to run for the South Dakota Senate and House of Representatives.
“We are excited to have so many candidates representing a common sense vision for accountable government, good schools and quality health care,” said Ann Tornberg South Dakota Democratic Party Chair.
28 Democratic candidates have filed to run for State Senate and 58 Democratic candidates have filed to run for State House. The total represents an increase from previous election cycles with Democrats competing in more districts than recent years. Ten seats where Democrats have filed are currently unopposed by Republicans or Independents.
“This is the most Democratic candidates we’ve had file since 2008. Former legislators are throwing their hat back in the ring, and new candidates have answered the call to public service, determined to create a more progressive South Dakota. Our candidates understand what’s at stake this election: equality, accountable government, healthcare – the list goes on,” Tornberg said.
U.S. House candidate Paula Hawks and U.S. Senate candidate Jay Williams also filed their petition papers last week.
