Democrats Call for Equal Pay for Equal Work

Sioux Falls, SD (April 12, 2016)-

Today is “National Equal Pay Day,” the day which represents how many more days women in the U.S. must work in the new year to equal the pay of men in the last year. In observance of “National Equal Pay Day,” Suzanne Jones Pranger Executive Director of the South Dakota Democratic Party released the following statement:

“The South Dakota Democratic Party strongly supports equal pay for equal work and the elimination of gender discrimination. On average, women earn only $0.79 for every dollar men earn, despite being the sole bread winner in their family in many situations. These statistics are even worse for women of color. For example, Native American women earn just $0.59, African American women just $0.60 and Latinas only $0.55 for every dollar paid to white men. Women also make up to two-thirds of minimum wage earners. If we are serious about reducing poverty and uplifting women in our community, we must enhance equal pay for equal work through legislation like the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act and FAMILY Act.”
