SDDP Statement on Sen. Mike Rounds’ Vote Against Aid to Ukraine

This weekend, Senator Mike Rounds celebrated the delivery of weapons to Ukraine on Fox News, and claimed “there’s a whole lot of us that are doing everything we can to assist them.” However, even though a bill sending $13.6 billion in emergency humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine received bipartisan support in the Senate, Senator Rounds voted against it.

Speaking on Fox News, Senator Rounds made the following statement:

“It’s been great that we’ve been able to get as many of those weapons in as already — as we have,” Rounds said. “But we’ve got — we’ve got more on the way and, uh, we clearly support them. We want them to be successful in this and we’d love to have them retain their country. Clearly, they’re brave. They are fighting and there’s a whole lot of us that are doing everything we can to assist them.”

SDDP Executive Director Berk Ehrmantraut issued the following statement in response:

“Support for Ukraine is bipartisan, but for Senator Rounds to say he’s doing everything he can he needs to vote for aid, not just make statements on Fox News. Senator Rounds had a clear opportunity to help Ukraine, but he voted no. While President Biden is doing everything he can to help the people of Ukraine, Senator Rounds needs to remember his actions speak louder than his words.”

Here’s what the Biden Administration is doing to address Russia’s invasion of Ukraine:

  • Last week, President Biden signed an Executive Order to ban the import of Russian oil, liquefied natural gas, and coal to the United States – a significant action with widespread bipartisan support that will further deprive President Putin of the economic resources he uses to continue his needless war of choice.
  • The Biden Administration along with G7 leaders and the European Union have also revoked Russia’s Most-Favored Nation Status, denied borrowing privileges at multilateral financial institutions, announced full blocking sanctions on additional Russian elites and their family members, banned the export of luxury goods to Russia, and banned the U.S. import of goods from several signature sectors of Russia’s economy.
