SDDP Statement on the SDGOP’s Continuing Support of Donald Trump

The South Dakota Democratic Party Executive Director Suzanne Jones Pranger released the following statement in response to the South Dakota Republican Party’s continuing silence and refusal to comment on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, Rep. Kristi Noem’s continuing support of Donald Trump, and Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s statement that he would still vote for Donald Trump, even after calling on him to withdraw from the race.
“South Dakota Republicans cannot have it both ways. You cannot condemn Donald Trump’s actions, even call for him to withdraw from the race, and then continue to support him with your vote. If you considered Trump’s action bad enough to justify calling for your own Party’s nominee to withdraw from the race for President, that candidate clearly should not have your continued support. Republicans acknowledge Donald Trump is unfit to be President, but unfortunately those Republicans also acknowledge that they will still vote for him because their commitment to Party is stronger than their commitment to doing what is best for the country.”
“This stunning lack of leadership begs the question: How far does Trump have to go before South Dakota Republicans finally have had enough? The longer Republicans continue to support him, the louder it speaks to their lack of judgment and failure to represent South Dakota values.
