Statement on the Passing of

Former President Jimmy Carter

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 30th, 2024

The South Dakota Democratic Party sends its condolences to the family of former

President Jimmy Carter as we mourn his passing. SDDP Chair Shane Merrill

released the following statement, honoring Carter's impact on South Dakota:

"Jimmy Carter was a true statesman. He served with dignity, honesty and honor. His

roots in farming were especially important for giving our rural communities a voice

in Washington DC at a time when it was desperately needed. He also leaves behind a

strong economic legacy, putting policies into place that continue to help everyday

Americans. His passion to protect the environment continues to be a top priority for

Democrats across the country, including here in South Dakota. Even after leaving

office, his sense of service continued, leading him to build homes for Habitat for

Humanity. He also continued to be an advocate for rural Americans and the most

vulnerable among us. Carter set the perfect example of what it means to be a public

servant. Thank you President Carter for your dedication to the United States of

America and its people."
